Title: “July Uprising: Constitution, Law, and Justice for Genocide”

Subichar Trust organized a special seminar titled “July Uprising: Constitution, Law, and Justice for Genocide” on Monday, 2 September 2024, at the RC Majumder Auditorium, Faculty of Arts, University of Dhaka. The event brought together scholars, legal experts, students, and civil society representatives to engage in thoughtful discourse on the historical and legal dimensions of the July Uprising and its implications for justice and constitutional governance in Bangladesh.

The seminar featured two key presentations:
“Justice for Crimes Against Humanity Committed During the July Uprising: Methods and Challenges”
Presented by Professor Dr. Nakib M. Nasrullah, Vice Chancellor of Islamic University, Kushtia.
Dr. Nasrullah addressed the legal complexities surrounding the prosecution of crimes against humanity committed during the July Uprising. He discussed the limitations within existing legal frameworks and proposed approaches for ensuring accountability and justice, emphasizing both international legal standards and local realities.

“The Constitutional Crisis and the July Revolution: Interim Government from the Perspective of the Constitution and Uprising” – Presented by Barrister Mohammed Belayet Hossain, Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh.
Barrister Hossain provided a constitutional analysis of the political unrest, focusing on the legal and institutional challenges posed by transitional governance during periods of national crisis. His discussion shed light on the role of interim governments and the importance of maintaining constitutional order during political upheavals.

The seminar drew an enthusiastic and diverse audience, filling the venue to capacity. The unexpectedly large turnout and the audience’s active engagement underscored the continued relevance and urgency of addressing past injustices and constitutional issues in contemporary discourse.
