Systematic Maiming and Political Persecution by State Forces
As part of our mission to document, expose, and seek justice for international crimes and systemic human rights abuses, Subichar Trust is conducting three high-impact fact-finding enquiries across different regions of Bangladesh. Each investigation is grounded in survivor testimony, forensic documentation, and legal analysis to support future accountability mechanisms and international advocacy.
Shatkhira, Bangladesh (2013-2018)
In the southwestern district of Satkhira, Subichar has uncovered a disturbing pattern of targeted violence committed between 2013 and 2018 under the rule of the Awami League government. Victims, primarily affiliated with opposition parties, BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, were subjected to brutal state-sponsored repression.
Our documentation reveals:
- 185 verified cases of violence, including:
- Systematic kneecapping to maim protestors and political opponents
- Extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and torture
- Clear indications of state complicity, involving local law enforcement and party cadres
- A long-term campaign to disable and terrorize political dissenters
This investigation aims to contribute to international legal efforts by highlighting the political nature of systematic violence and physical disablement as a tool of repression.
